Organic Glossary

Do you often find the world of organic food and its delivery a bit boggling? Not really sure what all the official sounding terms really mean? If so, you will definitely benefit from our basic glossary of terms associated with organic food found below.

Antioxidants - natural body chemicals (including vitamins, minerals, and enzymes) which protect against cell damage inflicted by free radicals, which cause disease, such as cancer and aging.

Aquaculture - the controlled cultivation and harvest of the natural produce of water such as aquatic plants and fish

Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) – also known as Mad Cow Disease. A degenerative neurological disease affecting cattle.

Certified Organic - an accreditation process for producers of organic food.

Crop Rotation – A farming system which rotates the crops grown on the same piece of land rather than planting the same crop year after year. Organic farms often use this system to avoid pests who prey in the same crop year on year.

Free Range Farming – A system of farming poultry which allows the birds to freely roam rather than confining them.

Genetically Modified Organism – also known as genetically engineered food and GM food. A plant or animal whose genetic makeup has been modified by any method, usually humans

Organic farming recognises that there is a connection between human health and the health of the food we eat and so produces “natural” produce, free of pesticides etc

Organic food is food produced by growers and farmers who are authorised and registered by organic certification bodies which are regulated by the United Kingdom of Organic Food Standards (UKROFS) or EU equivalents.

Pesticides – poisonous chemicals used to kill pests and minimize their impact on agriculture
